The Laurel is a dress, but the cowl add-on is free (you do need to have an account). The cowl will require approximately 1/2yd in addition to the pattern. I cut the bodice on the high crew line and selected the cowl for the size of the Laurel that I would use (not in the plus range, which appears to have a wider neck). I then walked the two pattern seam lines to make sure they are the same length. Unlike bands and also binding, cowl necks are generally 1:1 meaning you don't stretch either the body or the neck to put them on.

Some other notes that might help:
- Cowl necks are put on with the seam on the *outside* so it doesn't show when you are wearing it
- Cowls are a bit heavy - if you are using delicate or particularly stretchy fabric, you may want to reinforce or strengthen the back seam by a narrow strip of interfacing, twill tape, binding, or clear elastic.
- This cowl is shaped. You can also just make a big tube. Measure (at the seam line) around the neck and then cut a square of that (+3/4" for 2 x 3/8 seam allowances by 2x the length you want plus seam allowances. )
- If you want a bigger, more dramatic cowl, grab one from another designer but then you might have to trace the neck opening over.
Here's a video demonstrating what I just discussed.
